Meet Upward Bound!
Wahupa Upward Bound is a non-profit organization based in the San Diego community and funded 100% by the U.S. Department of Education. As part of the federal TRiO program, we assist first - generation, low- income, and/or at-risk students become academically and socially prepared for post-secondary education. Since 1995, Wahupa Upward Bound has been a part of the Kearny community and have assisted more than 150 students successfully complete high school and pursue their higher education. Currently, 60% of our students are the determined and tenacious students of SCT!
We provide the following free services for all Wahupa Upward Bound students:
- Personal Academic Counseling
- Academic Tutoring in English, Spanish, Math, & Science
- College Trips (we stay overnight near the colleges and visit multiple colleges) & Visits (we will tour the campus for a few hours then leave)
- Assistance with Colleges & Universities Applications
- Assistance with Financial Aid Application
- Saturday Sessions (an additional day to explore personal growth, Academic & Cultural activities, and college readiness development)
- Summer Program (6 week program consisting of Commuter & Residential phases)
Location:
Currently, as Kearny does not have a College & Career Center, we do not have a permanent designated location, however, Wahupa Upward Bound may be found in the "College Corner" inside the library near the "ImIn" space-- Wahupa Upward Bound, USD Upward Bound, & Wahupa Talent Search have been working together to coin this space as the "College Corner."
Hours & Days:
Counselors in the "College Corner" on Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.; Tutoring is held every Tuesday in Ms. JJ’s room (703) from 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Purpose of our Organization:
The purpose of our organization is to assist first - generation, low- income, and/or at-risk students become academically and socially prepared for post-secondary education, at no charge to eligible student nor their family.
